Scott A. Byrd, ATC, LAT
Candidate for President
Scott feels like he has been successful due to his ability to approach things using a team player mentality. Scott believes being elected as an officer of TATS is an honor bestowed upon that individual and should not be taken lightly. We must continue to listen to our membership as the member’s votes are what place us in office. Scott has served on numerous State and Local boards and civic service committees; Scott has also completed the Leadership Sevier program and Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Scott has also utilized opportunities within Covenant Health to continually educate himself on becoming a more efficient health care leader. Scott feels that GOD should come first and that HE has blessed him with the opportunity to attend leadership programs. Scott has been consistently active at the State level since 2001. He is looking forward to working with the executive committee of TATS and helping work to continually expand the opportunities for the BEST health care profession, Athletic Training. Scott has worked in a variety of practice settings giving him a more diverse view of our profession. He has worked in Clinic based outreach, Hospital based Secondary School setting and been a Head Athletic Trainer at the college level.
Scott is excited about the opportunity to become the next President of TATS. He has always valued the leadership structure of our great association. Scott looks forward to working together with some of the greatest minds in athletic training to continue building upon the foundation which has been set in place before us.
Scott is married to Carla Hasty Byrd and has three sons, Colton 8, Jackson 6, and Hayden 4.
Peggy Bratt, ATC, LAT, EMT-IV
Candidate for Vice-President
Peggy Bratt, ATC, LAT, NREMT, is a graduate of Maryville College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Certified since 2000, Peggy has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Alcoa High School, and is an assistant at Maryville College. Peggy served as Outreach Coordinator at Appalachian Therapy Center from 2000-2008, where she was responsible for coordinating athletic trainer coverage for five local high schools. In 2009, Appalachian Therapy merged with Blount Memorial Hospital, where in June 2009; Peggy took over as Sports Medicine Coordinator.
Peggy has served TATS as secretary for the last four years. She has been active in both state and district organizations since 2004, first serving on the Secondary Schools Committee where she remained until 2010. In 2006, she became Public Relations Chair for TATS, and the Tennessee Representative to the SEATA Public Relations Committee, serving until 2010. She has been the Tennessee representative to SEATA’s Women in Athletic Training Committee, now the Life Balance Task Force, since 2006. She has been a member of the TSSAA Wrestling Weight Management Executive Committee since its inception in 2003.
Other activities where she has served as an athletic trainer are: Either Head or Assistant Athletic Trainer for the TACA TN All-Star football team from 2000-2005, a staff athletic trainer for the United States Field Hockey Association from 2001-2003, for their annual USFHA Field Hockey Festival, and coordinated basketball coverage for the AAU Junior Olympics in 2002.
She coordinates an annual week-long student athletic trainer camp at Maryville College for local Blount and Monroe county students. She has implemented a shortened version of this camp in Elizabethton beginning in 2011. She received the Sandy Sandlin High School Athletic Trainer of the Year award in 2007. She was a columnist for The Blount Today, a local weekly newspaper, a First Aid/CPR instructor for the American Red Cross, and has been an ASEP Sports First Aid instructor for the TSSAA.
In her free time she enjoys travel, scuba diving and reading.
Johnnie Anderson, ATC, LAT
Candidate for Secretary
Johnnie Anderson is in his sixteenth year as a certified athletic trainer in the Greater Nashville area. He serves as Director of Sports Medicine for Sumner County Schools, coordinating athletic trainer coverage for a number of schools in the district. He also serves as the Middle Tennessee Representative for TATS.
Johnnie has been an active member of TATS since returning to Middle Tennessee in 1997. He joined the Secondary School Committee in 2000, serving as chairman of the committee from 2010-2012. During his tenure as chairman, the committee developed an interactive map of athletic trainers in secondary schools in Tennessee. He also serves as county contact for the TATS Public Relations Committee. He was a presenter at the 2003 TATS meeting, speaking on Emergency Action Plans, and was the recipient of the 2005 TATS Backbone Award.
As Middle Tennessee Rep, Johnnie serves as the Executive Board Liaison for the Governmental Affairs and Scholarship Committees. He has actively lobbied in the Tennessee Legislature for the concussion bills that were presented in 2012 and 2013, even writing the initial bill proposed in 2012. In 2013, he edited language from the original proposal so that it would be more beneficial to athletic trainers in the final law. He has also attended Capitol Hill Day in Washington, DC, lobbying members of Congress for issues related to athletic training.
Johnnie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University. He has also completed post-graduate work through Cumberland University and Lincoln Memorial University.
From 1997 to 2001, Johnnie served as a staff athletic trainer at Centennial Medical Center, with his primary assignment providing athletic training services at Gallatin High School and its feeder middle schools. Since 2001, he has been employed by Sumner County Schools and has served as an athletic trainer, teacher, Focus Educator, and Director of Sports Medicine.
Johnnie presents professional development seminars to area school systems and continuing education lectures to athletic trainers. Johnnie is married to the former Betsy Chalenburg, and they are expecting their first child in August.
Tina Cole, ATC, LAT
Candidate for Secretary
I am a lifelong resident of Tennessee and I have served as an athletic trainer in the State for over 12 years. I attended my first annual TATS meeting as an athletic training student and have attended 12 of the last 15 meetings. I have worked as a clinical outreach athletic trainer covering a range of sporting and special events. I am now an Assistant Manager in the department of Rehabilitation Services at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
I have served the TATS membership as a member of the Professional Education committee and am now in my third term as Chair of the Professional Education and Meeting Committee. I consider it both an honor and privilege to serve my fellow athletic trainers. I have a strong desire to see our Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society grow and become more involved with the issues facing our profession today. With that goal and direction in mind, I would proudly serve as the Secretary for the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society if elected and sincerely hope each member will support me in this election.
Therese Sparn, ATC, LAT
Candidate for Treasurer
I am in my 28th year as a Special Education teacher and head Athletic Trainer at Clarksville High School. I was a student trainer at UT-Chattanooga from 1979-1984, where I received my BS in Special Education. Then, I became a graduate assistant at Austin Peay State University and completed my MA in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Administration and Supervision. I teach Resource Biology and serve as the athletic trainer for 17 sports. I am a member of the Clarksville-Montgomery County, Tennessee and National Education Associations. I belong to the Tennessee Educators of Aquatics and Marine Sciences organization. I am also a member of the NATA, SEATA and TATS. I have been the secretary/treasurer for the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society since 1989. I held that office until it was separated in 2004. I have since been the treasurer. I have also had the experience of getting TATS through an IRS audit and have had to stay on top of new tax laws in order to keep TATS compliant with all IRS rules. When I took over as treasurer there was $514 in our account and we now have close to $120,000 in our accounts.

Brad Swope, ATC, LAT, EMT-P
Candidate for Treasurer
Hello fellow Tennessee Athletic Trainers. I would like to take a moment to allow me to introduce myself to those of you I do not know. My name is Brad Swope and I have been BOC certified since 1985 and TN licensed since 1993. I am also licensed as a paramedic, am a certified CPR instructor, have taught in the Fire and EMS Services and recently became certified in Critical Incident Stress Management. I was the Joe Worden Clinic/Professional Athletic Trainer of the Year recipient in 1997 and received my NATA 25 Year Award in 2005, served TATS as the Corporate Giving Co-Chairman for several years and am currently serving as the Chairman of that same committee; however, it is now the Corporate Relations Committee and am serving the NATA as a member of the Clinical and Emerging Practices in Athletic Training Committee. I am employed by BodyGuard Sports Medicine, a division of Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, where I serve as the athletic trainer for Station Camp High School, also volunteering my services to the Tennessee Highway Patrol providing them Athletic Training for their Troopers. I am active in my church with the high school student ministry and support the local FCA office, support the activities of TATS speaking at some of the State Meetings, and advancing the profession in Sumner County. I will speak this summer during the NATA Annual Meeting for the second time concerning Athletic Trainers in Public Safety.
As for seeking the office of Treasurer for Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society, I feel there is only one reason. It is time for the Athletic Trainers of TN to give Therese a break. She has served this organization above and beyond all expectations for 20 years. THANK YOU.
Mike Van Bruggen, ATC, LAT
Candidate for East Tennessee Regional Representative
Mike Van Bruggen has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Carson-Newman University since January of 2001.
Van Bruggen oversees all aspects of providing comprehensive health care for the more than 500 Eagle student-athletes. Additionally, Mike is responsible for the implementation of the athletic department’s comprehensive Alcohol & Drug Education and Testing Program. Van Bruggen is an active volunteer on local, regional and national levels, serving as a CPR instructor for the American Red Cross. He currently serves as the Tennessee representative on the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association college and university athletic trainers committee. Van Bruggen also serves the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society (TATS) as a member of the public relations committee, the honors & awards committee, and as a member of the corporate sponsorship committee. In 2009, TATS honored Mike with the Eugene Smith/Mickey O’Brien College Athletic Trainer of the Year award. In 2012, the college & university athletic trainers committee of the NATA honored Mike with the Head Athletic Trainer of the Year award for NCAA Division II.
Prior to arriving in Jefferson City, Mike was the Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director at Howard Payne University in Texas. While in Texas, Van Bruggen was active in the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association as a member of the Research & Education Foundation committee. He has also held appointments at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona and in the New York Mets minor league system. Van Bruggen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree from the University of Arizona.
Mike is married to the former Sheri Whitney and they have one son, Alex and a daughter, Samantha.
Tim Hoskins, ATC, LAT
Candidate for Middle Tennessee Regional Representative
Tim Hoskins lives and works in the heart of Middle Tennessee. He works as the Assistant Manager of Sports Medicine at Vanderbilt. Tim oversees sports medicine operations for Williamson County Schools as well as the Williamson County community. Tim works closely with the Vanderbilt Bone and Joint & Vanderbilt Cool Springs clinics.
Tim currently serves TATS as the Chairman of governmental affairs. Most recently, Tim, Chris Snoddy, & Johnnie Anderson worked diligently to see the passage of Tennessee's now concussion law. Tim worked with other medical groups to find common ground for a concussion bill that protected Tennessee's youth in sports. Tim also serves TATS and its student membership by being a member of the Scholarship committee.
Tim works closely with the Athletic Training program at MTSU. Here, he has served as an ACI, and mentored many students. He continues to foster learning to these students with staff, physicians, community members, & outreach opportunities.
Tim is also a past (2008) recipient of the prestigious Joe Worden Professional/Clinical Athletic Trainer of the year award.
Tim is married to Aimee Hoskins, RN who is a research Nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Ray Knight, ATC, LAT
Candidate for Middle Tennessee Regional Representative
I am a curriculum graduate from East Tennessee State University and completed my Master’s Degree at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. My interest and involvement in TATS goes back to my first TATS meeting while as a senior in high school when the meeting was held at the Vanderbilt Stadium Club on the top floor of the parking garage next to the stadium. While at ETSU, I remember leaving with Jerry Robertson at 3:30 a.m. eastern time, picking up Mike Goforth at Tusculum, and driving on a snowy Sunday morning to the TATS meeting. I am a past recipient of the undergraduate student scholarship award and in 2008 was recognized as the Eugene Smith / Mickey O’Brien College Athletic Trainer of the year. From 2006-2010, I was the chair of the scholarship committee and the last three years, I have been the chair of the Honors and Awards Committee.
If elected as the Middle Tennessee Representative, I will serve as your official spokesperson for all Athletic Trainers’ living and working in the middle region of TATS and maintain communication with the Executive Council on all TATS related issues.
Other things that as your new Middle Tennessee Rep that I will do for our organization are:

Create a plan to increase the communication statewide. I believe it is important to have a voice and for your voice to be heard, whether you are in East Tennessee, Memphis, Chattanooga, Nashville, or Sewanee.

Continue to work with the Secondary School committee to update and complete the high school Athletic Training Directory.

Develop a college Athletic Training directory. This directory will be on the TATS website and you will know exactly which ATC is working at a specific
school, similar to the High School directory.

Seek new ways for TATS to help improve the college and university Athletic Trainer.

Seek new ways to involve and evolve the 600+ members of TATS.

Continue to work on updating the photos that are on the TATS website.
As a lifelong resident of Tennessee - from growing up in Nashville, attending college at both ETSU and UTC, and now living and working in Franklin County I have developed a sincere love for TATS. I will work to make TATS better. Please take a moment to advance Athletic Training in Tennessee. Your vote counts.
Chris Glover, ATC, LAT
Candidate for West Tennessee Regional Representative
I began my career in 1985 as a student at The University of Tennessee at Martin. Since those days I have worked in almost every environment open to an Athletic Trainer in Tennessee. I have worked with schools, teams and corporations at every level. I feel this experience gives me a real world view of the issues we face as Athletic Trainers every day. I have been privileged to provide medical coverage from everything from church league softball, to professional rodeo including events such as NFL Hall of Fame Bowl, 5 TSSAA State Championships games and the College National Finals Rodeo. During this time frame, I have held positions from staff Athletic Trainer to West Tennessee Outreach Coordinator for Star Physical Therapy. My current position is the Health Clinic & Outreach Director for Bethel University in McKenzie, TN.
I was honored to hear I was nominated as a candidate for West Tennessee TATS representative. It is a position in which I hold in high esteem and have great respect for. I believe we are in crucial political times, TATS needs representatives that follow through with their commitments. If elected, I would proudly serve you and live up to the office in which I have been elected to. West Tennessee Athletic Trainers deserve a true representative. We need to receive information in a timely manner on issues that affect them not only in West Tennessee but throughout our profession. We live in an ever changing environment and the person that represents you should be your voice, expressing your opinions. I have always stood up for our profession regarding the issues that affect us most. I would be honored to serve as your representative for the West Tennessee area and be your voice.
Tripp Turner, ATC, LAT
Candidate for West Tennessee Regional Representative
A graduate of the University of Memphis, Tripp Turner is an active member of Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society, where he currently serves as the West Tennessee Regional Representative to the Executive Board. Tripp has served on several state committees including the Reimbursement Committee in which he is the past chairman, and the Secondary Schools Committee. He also works closely with the TSSAA and is a member of their Wrestling Weight Management Committee. A 25 year NATA member, Tripp is active in the community, speaking with various groups and professional organizations on topics related to athletic healthcare and sports medicine.
Tripp currently serves as the Director of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation for OrthoOne Orthopaedics in Collierville. In his present position he oversees the daily operation of all Sports Medicine programs as well as the Physical Therapy clinics in both Collierville and Olive Branch. In addition to his administrative duties, Tripp assists the physicians in clinic as a physician extender and covers a large 6A High School. He has been practicing and treating athletes from all levels of sports for more than 20 years.
Tripp and his wife, Tamara, have one son, Jacob, who is 11. In his free time, Tripp enjoys hunting, golf and spending time with family.
