My name is Jennifer Shumway and I am currently serving as the Program Director for the CAATE Accredited Professional Athletic Training Program at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.  I completed my Doctorate in Higher Educational Leadership at Union, my dissertation is entitled “Grit, Deliberate Practice, and Athletic Training Education:  Factors that Determine Board of Certification Exam Success”.

I joined the Union AT faculty in the fall of 2010.  At that time I served as assistant professor in the program as well as the athletic trainer for the women’s basketball program.  In 2012 I was promoted to Clinical Education Coordinator and continued as the AT for women’s basketball team.  I was officially installed as the Program Director in August 2014.  In 2017, I received the “Jerry Robertson Educator Award” by the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society.   I have served the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society a member of the Ethics Committee, as well as the Education Committee.  Since the fall of 2017, I have also served as a CAATE site visitor.

Prior to coming to Union I served as head AT at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida from the July of 2006 through May of 2010.  While at PBAU I served the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida as a member of the AT Student committee.

I am very passionate about the AT profession and would love to serve the West Tennessee area as the Regional Representative.  I am interested to hear the concerns of our clinicians and educators and act as a liaison to the Executive Board. I believe that education of the general populace, as well as the local medical community, is still a vital role of our leadership and I look forward to the opportunity to serve in this way.
